Just dealing.

Dress: Etsy
Scarf: Saver's
Sandals: Urban Outfitters
Hat & Straw Clutch: Thrift

I feel like I've been issuing a fair amount of apologizes on the blog here lately, so just add this one to the pile: I'm sorry I didn't make it back with the winner of the Bruklyn Belle/Huckleberry Vintage giveaway yesterday like I had promised. I got the call that my granny passed away unexpectedly yesterday morning, and instead of working on school projects and fashion articles like I had planned, I spent the morning with my family.

I'm really quite strong when it comes to the issue of death (at least in this instance). I'll miss her to pieces, but I know that she was old and had a good life. What's really tearing my heart into shambles is watching other family members struggle to accept it. When I walked up the ramp to her porch, my grandpa said "I lost my love," and started to cry. That crushed me. And watching my seven-year-old brother deal with his first death and my mom dealing with the lost of her mother crushed me, too.

Oddly enough, I didn't post these photos from the cemetery when I took them last month, but I've been working on editing them for the past couple of days. I'm still not sure that the editing is perfect (my hair is far redder than it naturally should be), but the time and occasion seem perfectly fitting for what my family and I are dealing with. Now I've gotta figure out how to adjust my already chaotic schedule so I can attend the funeral in Alabama on Thursday.
 photos by Corey!

Hopefully today's post hasn't been too depressing (I never want you to leave here sad). So to end on a lighter note, the giveaway winners are as follows:

♥ 1st place and winner of a $50 giftcard is Anash from Mom Military.
♥ 2nd place and winner of a beautiful clutch from Bruklyn Belle Vintage is Michal from North Country Girl
♥ 3rd place and winner of an awesome tote from Huckleberry Vintage is Julianned from Julianne's Media and Arts.

I'm very sorry for your loss, Starr. My grandma passed away a little over a year ago, and I can agree with you when you say the hardest thing is watching your family members grieve. It's wonderful to know that she left her mark on this world in the fact that you know she was happy and had a good life, and that you can take comfort in that. ((hugs))

Starr, I am so sorry to hear about your grandmother. She sounds like a wonderful woman and she must have made an incredible impact on your family. How lucky for your mom, grandpa, and younger siblings that they have a family member as strong as you to support them. You guys are in my prayers. xx

That really is so sad. I never knew my grandparents very well, so I can't say I can relate. I've grown close with my boyfriend's, though, and would be absolutely heartbroken if I lost her. So, I hope you're feeling alright and that things look up for you soon.

The photos, on the other hand, are lovely. As is your dress!

I'm so sorry, Starr. I lost my grandmother last year, and can't say I was as philosophical as you, but I agree, it's the worst to see your family suffering. Hugs and lots of thoughts. xx

I'm sorry for your loss. I get what you mean about finding other people's grief almost more difficult than an actual death.

Those pictures are beautiful though. I love the editing.

The photos are fabulous, but I'm so sorry to hear about your loss. What your grandfather said brought tears to my eyes [and I'm not usually an emotional person!]. It reminded me of my own aging grandparents.

Thinking of you Starr, best wishes and prayers are with your family right now. It is hard losing a grandparent, but its encouraging to know that like you said, she lived a good long life. She wouldn't want you to be sad! You are a strong woman. :) Hope everything works out for her funeral and that it isnt too stressful for your family. xoxo

I'm so sorry for your loss. My great-uncle just passed away a few weeks ago. I felt much the same as you- he had a good life and he was in a better place. But despite that the service was just heart-wrenching. Seeing my family members so torn up was awful. Much strength to you.

I am terribly sorry to hear about your grandma. I know what you mean about feeling worse about the situation for those around you than for you yourself. I felt the exact same way when my grandpa died. It was the first time I ever saw my mother cry and it made my heart break into pieces.

You take beautiful photos, and you're right, they are fitting. I'm sorry for your family's loss. It's so kind of you to realize that others in your family will struggle with it. I lost my own mom when I was 18 and for hours it didn't hit me (my now-fiance was there with me all evening). It wasn't until he was saying goodbye for the night that I realized my dad would never be able to say goodbye to her again and that's when it hit home.

A loss will never be easy and I think that support and love from those closest to us is all we can ask for to get us through those times. I'll be thinking of you tonight.

You have such a positive outlook on life and death. Some people can't be that strong so it's good that you can be there for your family.

The photos you and Corey took are very pretty and the scenery is like a dream.

that sentence from your grandfather is heartrending...i can't imagine what it must be like to lose someone you've grown old with...

your hat in the pictures is terribly sweet. funny, isn't it, how sometimes people make art before they need it?

What your granpa said was really touching and brought a little tear to my eye too :) I'm very sorry for your loss but glad to see that you're so strong and able to move on, managing to help who is around you. But don't forget to take good care of yourself as well, you will need some love too ;)

i recently lost my grandma too, and i'm so sorry to hear that you and your family have to say goodbye to a beloved granny as well. it is beautiful, however, how death can bring love and closeness back to family members. it's also beautiful to hear that you're celebrating the long, happy life she had. all the best to you and yours during this hard time!
