Zigzags and Art Deco

Ritz Theater in Talladega, AL
Dress: Estate Sale
Floppy Hat: Goodwill
Necklace: Saver's

In my latest Sync article, I dig into the history of the zigzag print. Since 70s looks are so big right now, and the zigzags and chevrons are only supposed to continue through the fall, I thought it would be an interesting subject to tackle. There's no way I could touch on the topic without recognizing Missoni and all the work they've contributed towards this trend, but I took it even farther and talked about the Art Deco period. The zigzag print was a main focus for the Zigzag Moderne part of the period, especially in architecture, so I used a photo of the Ritz Theater in Talladega, AL as my inspiration.

The dress was a real lucky find that works great with the theater, in my opinion. I got it at that 70s estate sale a few weeks back. It's a little snug in the bodice––as in I sneezed during this shoot and was very concerned that it was going to rip––but I'm glad I got to wear it for some pictures. I may put it in the shop or pass it around the Delightful Dozen first, I'm not sure. I was proud of how the necklace reflected the silver zigzags at the top of the building. It's such a small detail, but I liked it.

Jake and I shot these photo in his parents yard just after arriving for the 4th. They're probably not as good as they could be because our minds were lost on the holiday!

You can read the article Sync article here if you'd like (page 23).

Your photos are always brilliant--- you're a natural when it comes to posing or even trying out new poses. Meanwhile, I'm stuck in a rut!

Anyhow, you look wonderful, and I'm intrigued about the article. I've been going back on your blog posts and past articles. :)

Both my parents grew up in Talladega and I spent many summers there! That theater is gorgeous in person but not used for much any more.

Love the dress and the necklace. I much prefer zig zag over florals although they are sweet. I like sharp edges. The color combo of this dress is great. Off to read your article. So interesting how the architecture of the time was also zigzag.

love this dress! the skirt part is so bold & fun & the top looks so flattering on you! I'd be so sad giving this up if I were you! Love that you got your hat from Goodwill, I have a similar black one from there : ) This dress matches the theater so much, it's like it was inspired by it!

Your Sync article sounds fascinating! (I'm off to read it just as soon as I leave this comment.) As an art history buff, I like those sorts of "unusual" histories (typefaces, patterns, etc.). And can we just talk about that dress! It's quite possibly one of the most magical estate sale finds ever! The print, the cut, the colors...everything is absolute 1970's perfection. <3
