Penny & the Quarters: You and Me

It's been a while since I anticipated a film as much as Blue Valentine. I saw this trailer on James' blog, Bleubird Vintage, the other day, and I haven't been able to get it out of my head ever since. Maybe it's because I was writing a treatment for a film in my scriptwriting class at the time, dissecting all of my favorite films to figure out what made them so great. I really just couldn't get over how honest this story looks from the trailer.

I normally refrain from showing Jake this kind of thing, thinking that he'll only accept it as romantic mush, but to my surprise, he actually liked the trailer. We were sitting around in the living room with the t.v. off (I wish it was like that more often) when I pulled up the scene above on my phone.
The second "their song" began to play, Jake said, "that's my favorite song"– it literally only took him a single note to recognize it. It's called "You and Me" by Penny and the Quarters from the early seventies, and Jake knows it from his affiliation with Numero Group (our absolute favorite record label to ever exist). He said if he ever got married he had planned on using that song in his wedding, but now he can't because after the movie comes out "it'll belong to some 10-year-old girl in Arizona who just loooves Ryan Gosling." He's a tad bit upset that his secret song has been outed (especially in the manner that it was), but it's such a great song, I can't blame them for choosing it. I'll just be happy if a 10-year-old girl knows anything about great 70's soul music!

I've been tracking Blue Valentine since early reviews came out last year (or was it only six months ago? :D) and I really can't wait to see this. I usually don't watch movies with unhappy endings but Gosling and Williams are my favourite American actors. Williams made me cry in Me Without You (The 80s!) and the movie where terrorists blew up my football club, Arsenal.

Thanks for the music video. Now I have new things to watch on my iPod!

I love the Numero Group record label. My favorite album released by them is "Local Customs: Downriver Revival. It's lo-fi gospel. Though I do dig the album with the little kids singing soul. You should check out Abner Jay. He's not on the Numero Group label, but he's the most amazing soul/blues singer I've heard in a very long time.

wow...starr...i never watch trailers so i must say, thank you. i made darin watch it too. (he hates gosling, i kinda love im) but best of all was your link to the penny and the quarters version. poor jake. i'm afraid he's right, and unfortunately she (the 10 year old) probably won't ACTUALLY be into great soul music. but anyway, such is life and one must do what one loves anyway. you guys rock and i look forward to sharing this experience of this great film through the weird wild web world with you!

I TOTALLY agree about waiting for the film! Too bad I will have t wait EVEN longer for it to play as New Zealand gets films much later than the states! I have always loved Ryan Goslings acting :D He really is wonderful to watch.
Aw that happens to me with songs too and it always makes me a little sad!

tell him to not let the idea of anyone else ruin his love for the song. Here's the thing, maybe it will encourage a 10 year old girl somewhere to listen to classic and good music. It might inspire. The point is that he shouldn't let his dream get ruined by the ideas of someone he'll never meet and how they might take the song or listen to it.

That trailer looks amazing! I really need to watch the movie. Plus, Ryan Gosling is a great actor. I love that he seems to choose the movies he likes and not just acts in any random movie to get lots of cash.

First of all, how cute is it that your boyfriend had a secret wedding song picked out?!

Secondly, I'm seriously anticipating this film. It's going to be beautiful!

Somehow this had gone under my radar, but it looks really lovely. I love the atmosphere that Michelle Williams brings to things. Thanks for posting about it - I won't miss is now!

Its always annoying when something secret that you love is made mainstream public, but it sounds a beautiful song, and I'm glad to have heard it. I wonder if I can get my usually-skeptical-about-such-things boy to be as enthusiastic...

I can understand Jake's pain that his song has now been used in a film. Something so close to him has now been spread all over the world! ahhh well you are right if a 10 year old gets exposed to seventies soul than that can only be a good thing.
