Shop Dixi Dress & More Estate Sale Leftovers

Sometime last night it hit me that I forgot to upload one of the photos from my estate sale haul. I don't know how this one could have slipped by me since I love both these swimsuits so much, but somehow, amongst that big pile of vintage I collected, I completely forgot about this photo. The blue one is in spectacular condition, and the white one only has a problem in the breast area. There's not any damage to it at all, it's just that both breast cups have collapsed creating a deformed shape for the boobs. You can't really tell when it's on because there's so many gathers around the breasts, but I was still trying to figure out how to fix that problem. Any ideas?

Also, I got a lot of questions about estate sales yesterday. A lot of you from out of the country were asking if these sales were just an American thing or if they had them in your town too, but unfortunately I have no idea! I've heard from a lot of Americans that they don't have them in there towns either, so maybe it's just a southern thing. Basically estate sales are held when older people either move or die. I know it sounds awful, and it's for that reason that my boyfriend hates going with me (he doesn't feel right rummaging through other peoples lifetime collections of stuff). I did a pretty thorough post about them a while back, and I think it helped a lot of people understand how they work. If you guys don't have them in other countries, I can't understand why not! People move and die everyday leaving material things behind. There's no sense in keeping that stuff around or throwing it away. If I lived in a town that didn't have them, I would see about starting up a company that hosts the sales, but that's probably just the entrepreneur in me.

I know I should be doing a post about the Pirelli Calender right now, but I've got three sets of outfit photos that I can't wait any longer to show you! I should have never designated such a strict schedule for posting the calendar because, of course, that just makes me not want to do it.

I've been itching to show off this Shop Dixi dress ever since I got it on my doorstep a couple weeks ago, but I've been holding off until my Cynthia Vincent platforms came in the mail. I'm glad I did because I like the two together. I love the girlishness of the ribbons all over the dress, and the fact that the collar is detachable. Shop Dixi is feeding my collar addiction right now, and they didn't even know it!

Dress: c/o Shop Dixi
Vintage Hat: Thrift $3
Purse: Thrift $6
Cynthia Vincent Shoes: Ebay

I wish I could tell you how much I spent on the shoes, but I'm too embarrassed to mention it. I missed them when they were on the Target racks and had to suffer with the wretched Ebay price tags.

Also, one last bit here before I go, I've been featured by not one but two awesome friends as 'Blogger of the Month'. Thank you so much Annie & Amanda! To check out the interviews just visit Time Enough for Drums & The Upside of Wonder.

hey girl you are LOOKING GOOD!!! i love your gorgeous thick wavy hair. as for the swimsuit, i have had the same problem many times with the little boob-cups...what i did for my own turquoise polka dot 50s suit is to simply cut them right out of the inside. if i were a great seamstress i might sew in some sort of new lining instead, but i really don't care if my lil nips show a teeny bit when i'm cold (is this t.m.i?) anyway i don't think that your suit looks all that bad anyway, you could always sell it as it and let the buyer decide how she wants to handle it. or are you keeping it? they are both amazingly beautiful swimsuits, what a score! we have estate sales around here all the time but i never pay attention...just never got into that but i have friends who go and now i am determined to make it happen. so thank you for the extra bit of inspiration!

The old cups of the bathing suit probably disintegrated. You can open a seam, pull the old ones out, and put new ones in (looks like it would be easily done from the side seam).

That blue floral suit has a pattern that looks so familiar to me! I can't remember what I've seen it on (we might have had the same bathing suit at work or something), but that print is definitely a classic.

oh goodness. Look how cute you are in that hat!!!! I love this look. It is so sweet.

I don't think I'd be able to do estate sales either, but at the same time I do believe that stuff is just stuff. . .and I know that I wouldn't mind people coming into my home and buying things from me while I am alive. eh. My friend's grandmother just died and they gave me a dress she wore on her honeymoon in 1942 but it needs some cleaning up from sitting around for all these decades. I also have a couple other dresses they said I could sell. . but of course they told me I have to keep the honeymoon dress. It is very pretty but really stained. My brother went to an estate sale once and bought some woman's old teeth. . .he was a little crazy with his stuff he bought. I think he did that regularly (buying odd niknaks of the dead).

dont get me started on those shoes, I'm dying for them but I refuse to spend over 30 dollars because I suck and didn't go to Target the day they came out. I'm so jealous you got them! They look awesome with that dress, which btw that collar is amazing!

you are so pretty! those shoes are awesome and still cheaper probably than her usual prices for her shoes - $500 a pop! also, we have estate sales in california! lots of rich/old people in this state and if their stuff doesn't go to people in their family, it has to go somewhere, right? It's like a yard sale, kinda... anyways, yeah I love estate sales! they're very competitive around here, hah.

Oh i love the dress and the hat!

I guess Car Boot Sales are the nearest english equivalent to American Estate sales, although estate sales sound way more exciting! xx

that is interesting. i wonder if there are estate sales in other countries. i am from the north, New Jersey and Connecticut and have been to estate sales in both those states. though they tend to hire a company and way over charge so its pretty hard to get a good deal. i once found these nude pin up slides, slides amongst all this vacation and family photographs and when i went to ask how much, one they had not seen them and then they wanted to charge my a $100. so i walked away. still love estate and yard sales it is amazing what people have.

Your outfit is amazing! Love the collar and I bet those shoes will go with everything, so the whole cost/worth thing works out.

Maybe you could replace the pads in the swimsuit? I have no idea if that would work though.

And we have estate sales all the time here, so maybe it is just a southern thing. But, I mean, how else do they get rid of all that stuff in other parts of the country? Maybe it depends on if there is a company that runs the sales whether you hear about em alot of not.

you look fantastic and i adore the collar. it's the best part about the dress! :)

also, congratulations on being blogger of the month for more than one blog! you definitely deserve it.

YESYESYES, this outfit is absolutely amazing. And you are right, these shoes and this dress are perfect for each other, I see why you waited. I can't believe how great of conditions these swimsuits are in. You are a lucky girl.

When I started going to estate sales, I felt so, so awkward! Now I love the experience!

These bathing suits are incredible! You really made out at the estate sales! I am so afraid of what I will do when I move out of the south! :(

I had never visited shop dixi before this. The prices are reasonable (I had to locate the conversion rate...) and I love this dress. The collar is too sweet.

I love that dress and your hair looks wonderful I love the color is that natural?. I live in California we have garage sales no estate sales that I've ever heard of, I think thats mostly a southern and eastcoast thing, although when really wealthy people die they do sometimes have auctions is that the same thing, usually you have to bid on the item and the highest bidder wins.

Manja said...

I love that dress and you really have the most wonderful hair! I really need to find out if there are any estate sales here in the Netherlands...how do you find out about them?

This has got to be one of my favorite looks from you -- ever. <3 sorry you had to spend a lot on the shoes! But seeing how they look so awesome on you, well, I suppose it was all worth it? (:

Shoes are always a sound investment anyway! Atleast that what my mother says. I, myself, stopped buying cheap-o shoes just last year. Unfortunately, that means my collection has significantly dwindled. :P

Your photography is just getting better and better. I truly admire your use of light and hope to bring that ot my own blog shoots.

Lastly, I read both those features. Happy for you! You deserve it. You are so creative, talented and sweet :)

OMG I love those bathing suits. The white one is amazing. Are they going in the shop or for keeps?

As far as fixing it, I know that you can get bathing suit inserts at most fabric stores. You can just sew them in place of the old shelf bra.

haha, i just bought a pair of the wedges on ebay too and i feel the same way! but i've been browsing the internet for the original cynthia vincent harpers that cost $405. they are exactly the same besides the leather and the buckles. when i compare what i paid to that, i feel a lot better. haha
